Food insecurity and access to nutritious food continues to be a need. Organizations receiving food and nutrition grants develop high impact programs that use holistic and sustainable approaches to increase access to food for children and families living in rural and underserved communities.
The Community Foodbank of NJ and the St. Louis Area Foodbank have both received grants to expand their child nutrition programs. Community Foodbank of NJ received a $ 200,000 grant for its Kids Café, which provides emergency food services year-round, and its Family Pack program, which prepares summer take-out meals. Both programs will serve 4,800 children living in communities in need. The St. Louis Area Food Bank received a $ 100,000 grant for its School Food Markets program that helps address food insecurity in local school districts. Their grant will expand the program to seven additional schools and serve more than 4,000 students.
âWe are grateful for our partnership with Bayer Fund, as well as our partners in school districts in eastern Missouri and southern Illinois,â said Meredith Knopp, President and CEO of the Food Bank. from the St. Louis area. âBy giving students access to nutritious food at these school markets, we are removing a barrier to learning. This will improve class attendance and allow students to focus on learning rather than the implications of hunger that can land them in the school nurse’s office. This generous donation will help ensure that children in our community have a healthier future.
The second area of ââintervention of the Bayer Fund is STEM education. Science, technology and innovation continue to drive the economy and it is essential that students have access to quality education in these fields. The grants awarded provide academic, technical, and academic programs to underserved K-12 students.
National PTA, the nation’s oldest and largest children’s rights association dedicated to making every child’s potential a reality, received a grant of $ 150,000. This grant will provide 40 high-need and under-resourced PTA-affiliated schools in the metro areas of St. Louis, New Jersey, Pittsburgh and Berkeley, Calif., With the resources to host a Bayer Fund science festival. These festivals will impact more than 5,000 students and families in local areas.
“The National PTA and the Bayer Fund share a commitment to making science more accessible and less intimidating for students and their families, which is essential to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals and help bridge the STEM gap,” said Anna King, President of the National PTA. “We are grateful to the Bayer Fund for their long-standing support of our association’s efforts to provide hands-on STEM experiences to families, especially in communities where such opportunities exist. otherwise may not be readily available. “
The third area of ââfocus of the Bayer Fund is health and well-being. Grants awarded are dedicated to education and the provision of support services to patients, caregivers and populations at risk. The American Cancer Society has received a grant of $ 175,000 which will go to its Hope Lodge program. Each Hope Lodge offers patients and their caregivers free accommodation when their treatment can be in another city. These lodges provide a home-like environment where guests can retreat, connect with others and learn more about their treatment. The grant provided by Bayer Fund will be used for cleaning supplies, furniture and staff at each lodge.
âThe American Cancer Society is grateful to the Bayer’s Fund for its generous support of the Hope Lodge network. The funds will help remove barriers for cancer patients across the country to receive treatment away from home, without worrying about an additional financial burden, âsaid Howard Heino, vice president, Hope Lodge Operations & Facilities Management at the American Cancer Society.
In addition to grant giving, Bayer Fund offers a Matching Giving program to all Bayer employees in the United States. This program allows employees to donate up to $ 2,500 per year to a qualified local charity or multiple charities of their choice, and the Bayer Fund will match 100% of the employee’s donation.
In 2020, the Fund awarded $ 17 million to more than 3,400 charitable and nonprofit organizations to help meet basic needs in food and nutrition, STEM education, and community development.
